Practical guide

What to know before you start

Convert a PDF to booklet format for printing with this free online booklet maker. KissPDF rearranges ordinary reading-order pages into paired printer spreads, adds required blank pages, and creates an A5 booklet on A4 paper or a Half Letter booklet on Letter paper for duplex or manual printing.

Convert PDF to booklet page order

A booklet cannot be printed in ordinary page order because each folded sheet contains pages from different parts of the document. For an eight-page booklet, the imposed sides are 8–1, 2–7, 6–3, and 4–5. After double-sided printing and folding, those pages return to normal reading order.

  • Every source page is placed once
  • Blank pages are added until the booklet has a multiple of four pages
  • Front and back previews show the actual downloaded sheet order

Create an A5 booklet on A4 or Half Letter booklet

Choose A5 booklet on A4 to place two A5 pages on each landscape A4 side. Choose Half Letter on Letter for the equivalent North American paper layout. The complete source page is fitted proportionally inside its half-sheet area rather than stretched or deliberately cropped.

  • A5 booklet on 210 × 297 mm A4 sheets
  • Half Letter booklet on 8.5 × 11 inch Letter sheets
  • Two booklet pages per printed side for folding once along the center

Duplex and manual booklet printing

Short-edge duplex is the recommended starting point for most printers using landscape booklet sheets. Long-edge mode rotates each back side by 180 degrees to compensate for that printer setting. Manual duplex groups all fronts first, followed by the backs in reverse sheet order. Printer feed paths vary, so test one sheet before printing a long booklet.

  • Print the downloaded PDF at Actual Size or 100%
  • Keep output pages and physical sheets in their generated order
  • Fold each sheet in half and staple along the center

Prepare selected pages and scanned spreads

Use a custom page range when only part of the PDF belongs in the booklet. Page rotation can correct all pages or alternate clockwise and counterclockwise directions. When one scanned PDF page contains two facing book pages, split it left-first or right-first before booklet imposition; the split can apply to all selected pages or only a specified range.

  • All pages or a custom page range
  • Left-to-right and right-to-left reading direction
  • No rotation, all-page rotation, or alternating odd/even rotation
  • Optional left-first or right-first spread splitting

Output quality, privacy, and PDF limitations

KissPDF processes the selected document in browser memory and creates a separate booklet copy. Ordinary text, images, and vector drawing commands remain PDF content instead of being intentionally rasterized. Booklet imposition does not transfer links, annotations, form fields, or other interactive objects into the new page placements, and rewriting invalidates digital signatures.

  • No document upload, account, or watermark
  • Ordinary text normally remains sharp, searchable, and selectable
  • Keep the original PDF when interactive features or signatures matter

Frequently asked questions

Clear answers based on how this tool actually works.

How do I convert a PDF to a booklet?

Select the PDF, choose A5 on A4 or Half Letter on Letter, confirm the source pages, reading direction, and printer mode, then create and download the booklet PDF.

How do I print a PDF as a booklet?

Create the booklet PDF, print it at Actual Size using the duplex setting chosen in the tool, keep the sheets in order, fold them in half, and staple along the center.

How are PDF pages arranged for booklet printing?

KissPDF pairs outer and inner pages on opposite halves of each print side. An eight-page booklet uses 8–1, 2–7, 6–3, and 4–5.

Why were blank pages added to my booklet?

A folded booklet needs a page count divisible by four. KissPDF adds blank pages at the end of the logical document when required so every physical sheet has four booklet pages.

Can I make an A5 booklet from an A4 PDF?

Yes. Choose A5 booklet on A4. Each complete PDF page is fitted into one A5 half of a landscape A4 print sheet.

Can I create a booklet on Letter paper?

Yes. Choose Half Letter booklet on Letter to place two Half Letter pages on each landscape Letter side.

Should I flip on the short edge or long edge?

Short-edge duplex is the recommended starting point for most landscape booklet jobs. If your printer requires long-edge duplex, select that mode so KissPDF rotates the back sides to compensate.

Can I print a booklet without an automatic duplex printer?

Yes. Manual duplex places all front sides first and then the back sides in reverse sheet order. Test one sheet to learn the correct way to reinsert paper into your printer.

Can I make a right-to-left PDF booklet?

Yes. Choose Right to left to swap the page placement for right-to-left reading order.

Can I split scanned two-page spreads before making the booklet?

Yes. Choose left-first or right-first splitting and apply it to all selected pages or only a custom page range.

Will booklet conversion keep PDF text searchable?

Ordinary text generally remains PDF text because pages are transformed and embedded rather than rendered as screenshots. Unusual document structures may still be normalized during saving.

Are links, forms, and signatures preserved?

No. Page appearance is preserved, but links, annotations, form fields, and similar interactive objects are not moved into the imposed page cells. Existing digital signatures become invalid.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. Booklet conversion runs locally in your browser and downloads a separate PDF.

Is booklet PDF the same as multiple pages per sheet?

No. Pages per sheet reduces sequential pages onto each output sheet. Booklet conversion also changes page order so the document reads correctly after double-sided printing and folding.
