Practical guide

What to know before you start

Use this free PDF watermark adder to place custom text, a company logo, or another image on PDF pages. Preview the result, adjust size, position, rotation and opacity, apply the watermark once or as a tiled pattern, and download the finished PDF without uploading the file.

Add a text or image watermark to PDF pages

Create a text watermark such as Confidential, Draft, Sample, a copyright notice, or a recipient name. To add a logo to the PDF, choose Image / Logo and select a PNG, JPG, or WebP file. A tightly cropped transparent PNG usually produces the cleanest image watermark.

  • Choose from three text styles
  • Set the text color
  • Upload a logo or custom graphic
  • Preview the watermark before downloading

Control watermark position and appearance

Drag a single watermark directly on the PDF preview or choose one of nine position presets. Set text size in points, resize an image relative to the page, choose a rotation angle, and reduce opacity so the document remains readable. Tile repeats the same watermark in staggered rows, with a separate size and density setting.

  • Single or tiled watermark
  • Clockwise and counterclockwise rotation
  • Independent Single and Tile sizes
  • Transparency from subtle to fully opaque

Watermark all pages or a custom page range

Add the watermark to all PDF pages or enter a custom range such as 1-3,5,8-. Single-watermark placement is adapted to portrait, landscape, rotated, and differently sized pages. Choose Over content for normal watermarking or Below content when the page artwork has transparent areas.

  • All pages by default
  • Individual pages and page ranges
  • Over or below existing content
  • Review every selected page using the page controls

Keep the original PDF content sharp

KissPDF embeds the source PDF pages and adds a reusable watermark image without rendering the complete page as a screenshot. Ordinary text and vector artwork remain sharp and searchable. Rebuilding pages can remove interactive annotations, form controls, links, and certificate-based digital signatures, so keep the original file.

  • No full-page rasterization
  • One embedded watermark reused across pages
  • Original file remains unchanged
  • Local processing with no document upload

Frequently asked questions

Clear answers based on how this tool actually works.

How do I add a watermark to a PDF?

Choose the PDF, enter watermark text or upload an image, customize its size, position, rotation, opacity and pages, then click Add watermark.

Can I add an image or logo watermark to a PDF?

Yes. Upload a PNG, JPG, or WebP image. A tightly cropped transparent PNG normally produces the cleanest logo watermark.

Can I watermark only certain PDF pages?

Yes. Choose Custom and enter pages such as 1-3,5,8-. Open-ended ranges are supported.

Can I add a watermark to every page of a PDF?

Yes. All pages is selected by default, so the same text or image watermark is applied throughout the PDF.

Can I repeat a watermark across a PDF page?

Yes. Select Tile to repeat the same text or image in a staggered pattern across every selected page.

What is the difference between over and below content?

Over content keeps the watermark visible above the page artwork. Below content places it first, so an opaque page background may cover it.

Does a watermark prevent copying?

A visible watermark can communicate ownership, status, or the intended recipient, but it does not technically prevent copying or editing. Use PDF password protection when access control is also required.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. PDF previewing, watermark creation, placement, and output generation run locally in your browser.
