Practical guide

What to know before you start

Add page numbers to PDF files online for free without uploading the document. This PDF page-numbering tool lets you insert page numbers in all or selected pages, choose where they appear, set a starting number, and format facing pages for books and other two-sided documents.

Insert page numbers in all or selected PDF pages

Number the complete document, or start PDF page numbering from a specific page by entering a range such as 2-8,11,15-. This can leave covers, title pages, appendices, or other front matter unnumbered. The sequence advances only on selected pages, so excluded pages do not create gaps.

  • All, odd, or even page shortcuts
  • Individual pages and page ranges
  • Open-ended ranges such as 5-
  • Choose any positive or negative starting number

Choose the page-number position and format

Place page numbers in any of nine positions at the top, middle, or bottom of each page. Use Arabic numbers, uppercase or lowercase Roman numerals, then choose a plain number, Page 1, Page 1 of 12, or a custom format.

  • Nine page positions
  • Four practical margin settings
  • Helvetica, Times, and Courier
  • Custom color, background, shadow, size, and opacity

Add page numbers to facing pages

Facing pages alternate left and right positions so page numbers can follow a book or booklet layout. Enable First page is a cover when page one stands alone; this shifts the alternating placement for the remaining spreads. Center positions remain centered.

  • Single-page and facing-page modes
  • Optional standalone cover page
  • Mirrored left and right placement
  • Full-page preview with page navigation

Keep PDF pages sharp and interactive

KissPDF writes page numbers as searchable vector text directly into the existing PDF instead of rendering pages as screenshots. Page sizes, CropBoxes, rotations, forms, links, and annotations remain in the document. As with any PDF edit, an existing certificate-based digital signature becomes invalid.

  • No page rasterization
  • Mixed page sizes and rotations supported
  • Original PDF remains unchanged
  • Local processing with no document upload

Frequently asked questions

Clear answers based on how this tool actually works.

How do I add page numbers to a PDF?

Choose the PDF, select a position and format, set the pages and first number, review the preview, and click Add page numbers.

Can I start PDF page numbers on page 2 or page 3?

Yes. Choose Custom range and begin it at the required PDF page, such as 2- or 3-. Set Start numbering at to the number that should appear there.

Can I number only selected PDF pages?

Yes. Use ranges such as 1-3,7,10-12. Numbers advance only through the pages included in the range.

Can I number only odd or even PDF pages?

Yes. Choose Odd or Even to select those physical PDF pages instantly, without entering a custom range.

Can I use Roman numerals for PDF page numbers?

Yes. Choose uppercase I, II, III or lowercase i, ii, iii. Values at zero or below remain Arabic because Roman numerals have no standard zero or negative form.

Can I use Page 1 of 10?

Yes. Choose the Page 1 of 12 template. In a custom format, {n} is the current number and {p} is the total number of pages in the PDF.

What are facing page numbers?

Facing mode mirrors left and right positions across alternating pages, which is useful for books, booklets, manuals, and other two-sided documents.

Will existing links and form fields remain?

The tool adds text to the existing pages rather than rebuilding them, so ordinary links, annotations, and form fields remain. Always review important interactive documents after editing.

Are page numbers searchable?

Yes. They are added as vector text using an embedded standard PDF font, not as part of a page image.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. PDF previewing and page-number generation happen locally in your browser.
